Amazon Outage: Why Amazon Isn’t Working and How to Fix It
If Amazon is down or acting strangely right now, you’re probably wondering whether this is a widespread outage or just something happening on your end. You’re not alone. Amazon serves tens of millions of shoppers across the US every day, and even brief disruptions can affect checkout, order tracking, streaming, or account access.
This page breaks down what typically causes an Amazon outage, what you can try on your own before reaching out to support, and when it’s time to contact Amazon customer service directly.
Is Amazon Down Right Now, or Is It Just You?
Before assuming there’s a full Amazon outage, take a moment to check the reports at the top of this page. Those are submitted by other users experiencing issues in real time, which can help you figure out if the problem is widespread or isolated to your device or connection.
If reports are spiking in your area or across the country, it’s likely a broader Amazon problem affecting servers or specific services like Prime Video, Alexa, or the shopping app. If you’re the only one seeing issues, the fault is probably local, tied to your Wi-Fi, app version, or device settings.
Common Signs of an Amazon Outage
- The website won’t load or times out repeatedly
- The Amazon app crashes or freezes on opening
- Checkout fails or gets stuck at payment
- Orders don’t update or tracking information is missing
- Prime Video or Amazon Music won’t stream
- Alexa devices stop responding to commands
What to Try First When Amazon Isn’t Working
Most issues with Amazon not working come down to something simple, not a full-scale failure. Before you contact customer service, run through these quick checks.
- Restart the Amazon app or refresh your browser tab
- Check your internet connection on another site or app
- Update the Amazon app to the latest version
- Clear the app’s cache or your browser’s cache and cookies
- Log out and log back into your Amazon account
- Try a different device or browser to isolate the problem
- Restart your router if pages load slowly across your whole network
If you’re using Alexa or a Fire TV device, unplugging it for about 30 seconds and plugging it back in often resolves temporary connection glitches.
Common Amazon Faults and How to Fix Them
Here’s a quick reference table for the issues US shoppers report most often, along with practical steps to resolve them.
| Fault | Likely Cause | Suggested Fix |
|---|---|---|
| App won’t open or crashes | Outdated app version or corrupted cache | Update the app through your app store, then restart your device |
| Checkout fails or page freezes | Payment method issue or temporary server load | Try a different payment method or wait a few minutes and retry |
| Order tracking not updating | Carrier delay or system sync lag | Check the order details page again after a short wait |
| Prime Video won’t stream | Network speed or app glitch | Test your internet speed and restart the streaming app |
| Alexa not responding | Wi-Fi drop or device firmware issue | Restart the device and confirm it’s connected to Wi-Fi |
| Can’t log into account | Incorrect credentials or account lock | Reset your password through the official Amazon login page |
Common Amazon Error Codes and What They Mean
Amazon sometimes displays error codes instead of a plain message. Here are a few that are officially documented and what you can do about them.
| Error Code | What It Means | What To Do |
|---|---|---|
| 500 Internal Server Error | A problem on Amazon’s server side | Wait a few minutes and reload the page |
| 503 Service Unavailable | Amazon’s servers are temporarily overloaded | Try again later; this usually resolves on its own |
| Fire TV Error 5006 | Streaming app connectivity issue | Restart the Fire TV device and check your network connection |
If you come across an error code not listed here, avoid guessing at fixes found in unofficial forums. It’s safer to confirm details directly with Amazon support.
When to Contact Amazon Customer Service
If you’ve tried the basic troubleshooting steps above and Amazon is still not working, it’s time to reach out directly. This is especially true if:
- An order was charged but never confirmed
- Your account shows suspicious activity or gets locked
- A delivery is missing and tracking shows no updates for days
- Prime membership benefits aren’t applying correctly
You can reach Amazon’s official support team through the Amazon Customer Service page, where you’ll find options for chat, phone, and email support based on your specific issue.
Keep your order number and account email handy before contacting support. It speeds up the process significantly.

My account was closed for no legitimate reason on 8/20/26, tried 5 new email addresses for new account all came back locked out or account suspended lockout request declined, customer service no help. Still billed for subscriptions and they have multiple credit card info. If anyone has experienced this issue or knows how to resolve please advise. I'm 77 years old retired living alone no family and depended on them to maintain a normal way of life. This may be due to system malfunctioning or human error. (Nashville, Tn.)
