Outagenow.com is an independent platform that makes outages in the US visible, based on reports from users. No automatic feeds from providers, just what people actually report.
Why this platform exists
I’m Mark Kwebeman (LinkedIn). In 2023, I had my own internet connection go down and had no idea whether the problem was on my end, with my provider, or part of a wider outage. The information I could find was slow, unclear, or came from the provider itself, hardly an independent source when you want to know whether they’re the ones with the problem.
That was the direct reason I built Storingvandaag.nl: a place where the information comes from the people actually experiencing the problem, rather than from the party causing it. The same concept is also available here for the US via Outagenow.com. We have no commercial partnership with any of the providers named on this website.
Who’s behind the platform
Outagenow.com is run entirely by me. There’s no editorial team, marketing department, or investor behind it. I’ve worked on websites and online platforms for years and built Outagenow.com myself. That also makes me responsible for the technical operation of the platform and for how user reports are collected and processed.
How an outage is confirmed
The system works on three principles:
User reports. When you report an outage for a service, it gets logged. Only once the number of reports for that service clearly rises above the usual level is it shown as an outage. A single report is usually not evidence of a widespread outage, but a clear spike in reports can be.
Protection against misuse. To prevent anyone from manipulating the picture, you can only submit one report per service every 15 minutes. Reports that don’t meet the conditions are automatically and immediately blocked, without any manual intervention.
No external data sources. Outagenow.com doesn’t buy data from providers and has no partnerships with the companies listed on the site. That also means the platform can never be faster than the reports that come in. If an outage hasn’t been reported by anyone yet, you won’t see anything about it. That’s a deliberate choice in favor of independence, with the benefit that the site runs on the community’s real-time activity.
What this platform isn’t for
Outagenow.com is not a replacement for providers’ official status pages and cannot say with certainty what the technical cause of a problem is or when an outage will be resolved. By collecting user reports and comparing them with the usual number of reports, Outagenow.com can quickly show when an unusually large number of people are experiencing problems at the same time. That can be a strong indication of a wider outage. For official confirmations and updates, please refer to the relevant provider or service.
